MAY REPORT LPF EC ATL2 (2019)

For the May meeting 2019

MEDIA COVERAGE:

The Cape Coral Breeze printed my letter on “bring home the bacon” provisions in new State budget. My letter was written in your name. FYI, “Florida Politics” (FP) carried my comments on the same theme at about the same time, under my title “Pinata Politics”: http://floridapolitics.com/archives/295909-new-budget-full-of-spending-nuggets#comment-85282

I registered with “Florida Bulldog” and made some suggestions for bail reform in misdemeanor cases in your name. (Thanks for the tip, Suzanne): https://www.floridabulldog.org/2019/05/in-florida-where-reforms-are-slow-to-arrive-cash-bail-remains-the-law-of-the-land/?unapproved=627973&moderation-hash=2ef7751f5e97e0e4d5b0cc16ca3e2302#comment-627973

I  commented on an FP article about VisitFlorida having to cut its budget due to reduced State funding: http://floridapolitics.com/archives/296505-visit-florida-to-trim-staff-after-budget-cut#comment-86204

There was an FP article with some interesting stats on capital punishment. I posted, citing the LP Platform position opposing the death penalty. https://floridapolitics.com/archives/297108-by-the-numbers-floridas-death-penalty#comment-86550

NEW MEMBERS:

(Justin Amash’s LP membership is a work-in-progress)

DEVELOPING ISSUES SPOTTED:

GOLDEN FLEECE AWARD. It might be useful to go through the State budget, as finally adopted, to identify “nuggets” of wasteful spending that can be lobbed into editorial pages each week or so. The letters would make it clear that no elected Libertarian would be silly enough to pass budget items like this. (This is similar in spirit to Greg Peele’s proposal for “Crime of the Week” items, addressing silly local ordinances throughout Florida).

TRANSPARENCY. There are now over 1100 exemptions from the Florida Constitution’s requirement for governmental transparency, according to the Florida Phoenix. We object:  https://www.floridaphoenix.com/blog/just-to-let-the-public-know-it-wasnt-a-stellar-year-for-transparency-in-government.

BAIL REFORM. It was once suggested that the best cure for an unjust law was to enforce it rigorously. Maybe, but people get hurt in the meantime. Misdemeanor bail in Florida is an abuse that cries out for reform. (see “Media” above).

OTHER:

I attended the LPF Convention in Tampa early May and was named one of your three Directors. David DeForest took my place as your Region 12 Regional Representative. (He is aggressively rejuvenating our Charlotte County LP affiliate).

Your three Directors held a long telephone conference on May 16, thrashing through several issues that we think  are (or ought to be) worthy of LPF EC attention. MAI was the result (“Mutually-Assured Illumination”).

My agreement to serve as a member of the EC Legislative Action Committee and the Audit Committee is pending approval by the Chair.

I attended a meeting of the Lee County affiliate EC on May 22. Our Region 12 Representative (David DeForest) was also there. Delicious gossip was exchanged with Rick Mollek and Ben Bachrach and Collen Couillard. The highlight was David’s in-person report on organizing Charlotte County.

A special meeting of the LPF EC is scheduled for May 23.
